The illustrations used on this website have been culled from three sources:
1. Those published in an 1841 one-volume edition of Smollett’s translation of Lesage’s Gil Blas by Willoughby & Co., which in turn had been based on designs created by Jean Gigoux (1806-1894) that originally appeared in a French edition of the novel published by Paulin in Paris in 1835.
2. Engravings of illustrations made by Robert Smirke R.A. (1753-1845), a noted illustrator of his day, and reproduced in an original French language edition of the novel published in 4 volumes by Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme of Paternoster Row, London, in 1809.
3. Unattributed illustrations to a Spanish (Castilian) version of Lesage’s novel published by Ediciones HYMA in Barcelona in 1932
